General Overview of Carbondale, California

As an unincorporated community, Carbondale, California is located in Amador County, California.

In the past, it used to be known as Buckeye, and it’s an extremely small area today that is all but abandoned. This is similar to many areas in Amador County. The abundance of ghost towns in Amador County is due to the mining past that defined it and how towns were solely set up for that purpose.

The closest area to Carbondale is Ione, which is part of the Southern Pacific Railroad.

Currently, Carbondale, California only has one single resident within it, which is why it’s considered to be a ghost town today.

In the past during the California Gold Rush, it was an extremely large town that was even bigger than Sacramento. That’s because it was used as a supply town and used to be an integral part of the process of coal mining and the subsequent shipment of goods that occurred.

At one point, it had a brick maker, a big hotel, a train station, and even some of the various saloons that defined the “wild wild west.”

In the past from 1922 to 1955, there was a post office that was two miles from Carbondale that also doubled as a private residence.

Besides the one residence in Carbondale, there is not much else of note. The one school house building that still exists there is falling apart and is quite dilapidated. This red building is in such a state that it is is broken up into pieces and is slowly crumbling apart.

During the 1860s, brown lignite was discovered at Carbondale deep in the ground. It was actually 70 feet deep in which they found it.

These coal deposits found in Carbondale were used for the railroads and for the fuel that the industries in California relied on.

By 1876, the Amador Branch Railroad, an extension of the Central Pacific Railroad, was built from Galt to Carbondale. It ran 27.2 miles in length, and eventually, it was expanded even further into Ione.

The coal that was mined from Carbondale was shipped to all over Northern California by railroad, leading to the town growing in size and changing from the name of Buckeye to the more appropriate name of Carbondale.

Many private residences and apartments used the brown coal and lignite from Carbondale to heat their homes in their furnaces.

Carbondale continued to expand further into the 19th century, aided by the fact that it was also in the middle of land that was ideal for cow grazing. At one point, there were a variety of large warehouses present on the main street, as well as various Victorian buildings, sidewalks, and a general store.

The downfall of Carbondale though occurred at the start of the 20th century in which oil was replacing coal as the main source of fuel in California and the west coast, long before it became

the norm in the rest of the United States.

Eventually, service for passengers was discontinued to Carbondale and by the 1920s, so was freight. Many of the large warehouses were destroyed, as well as the railroad station.

First Security understands the security needs of Carbondale and Amador County in general and will be able to provide the very best in security services.
