How to Prevent Car Break-Ins

Car break-ins still occur far more than people think, especially if you park your car overnight on a street. Even during the day time in certain areas, car break-ins are a very real possibility, such as when you’ve parked your car at a shopping mall complex.

But while car break-ins are surprisingly common, there are many steps that you can take to prevent their occurrence, rather than having to deal with the fallout afterwards.

Park in a Visible Area

One simple way to prevent car break-ins is to always make sure that you park in a visible area. This means parking in an area that is well-lit or where there’s a constant flow of foot traffic. For example, if you’re out for the day shopping, make sure to always park your car as close to the store as possible. And if you’re parking your car overnight, try and park it next to a street light or where it’s easily seen. The more concealed that your car is, the greater the chance that it might fall victim to a patented “smash-and-grab” job.

Don’t Leave Valuables Inside of It

Another way to prevent car break-ins is to not leave any valuables inside of the vehicle, especially ones that are visible from the outside. For example, don’t leave a shopping bag, a phone, a tablet, or a wallet on a seat. Would-be thieves could be tempted. If you must leave something valuable in your car, place it in the trunk or in the glove compartment.

Make Sure It’s Locked

This sounds like an obvious one, but you also need to make sure that your car is always locked, even if you’re only going to be gone for a few minutes. A few minutes are plenty of time for car break-ins to occur. Always make sure the windows are all the way up, or at least up enough to prevent a hand from reaching inside, and that the doors are locked.

Activate the Car Alarm

Usually the car’s factory alarm should do the trick, though you always have the option of installing a third-party alarm system as well. Having the car alarm activated is one of the best ways to prevent a break-in, since the noise will most likely scare away the thieves. If your car currently doesn’t have an alarm system, you should definitely have one installed. If you have a an alarm sticker that you feel comfortable putting on one of the car windows, do so as well.

Use the Club

Another thing that you can do is to use the Club or an equivalent. Placing it on your steering wheel will act as a deterrent. Thieves will be less likely to try and break into your car if they see it, since they don’t want any complications.

There’s no guarantee that your car won’t be broken into, but if you follow the above steps, you’ll be greatly reducing the chances of this being the case. As with many things related to security, you want to be preventive and proactive. Good luck!
