General Overview of Lone Pine, California

Lone Pine is located in Inyo County, California and is a census-designated place, also known as a CDP. It’s way above sea level, as its elevation is 3727 feet.

It’s actually considered to be a “frontier” area and is located in Owens Valley, which is extremely close to the Alabama Hills.

The population of Lone Pine is 2,035, a number which has increased from 2000, in which it was 1,655.

The total area of Lone Pine is 19.215 square miles, giving it a population density of 110 people per square mile. This means that it is very spread out.

Lone Pine has an extremely rich history. Lone Pine as we know it today first began to be settled in 1861, in which a cabin was built there during the winter. By 1870, a post office was opened there.

Close by to Lone Pine is Mount Whitney. The residents of Lone Pine at the end of the 19th century wanted to create an eastern trail up to its peak, and by July 22nd, 1904, it was completed.

This trail is actually still in use today, with the start of the trail from Lone Pine to Whitney Portal even being named by the Smithsonian Institution as a National Historic Trail.

It should be noted though that Lone Pine has experienced some hardships as well. One of the major hardships occurred on March 16th, 1872, in which a harsh earthquake devastated the majority of it and killed 26 of the residents. There is a grave in Lone Pine today that serves as a remembrance.

Lone Pine has also served as a vital supply town for some of the other towns and cities in the area during the height of the mining that took place in California.

Its proximity to the Alabama Hills and the beauty that resides within it has made Lone Pine a site where over 400 films and 100 television episodes have been filed. The film that started it all was the silent film The Roundup in 1920.

The median age of the population is 41.9 years. This is above both the national median age of 37.2 years and the State of California’s median age of 33.3 years. Because of its status as a rural or frontier town, this is not unusual.

47.4% of the population is 45 years and older.

Despite its rich history, Lone Pine is not the healthiest of places in terms of the wealth of its residents. Its median household income is only $32,712, which is very low. To put things into perspective, consider that the State of California’s average is $58,328 and the national average is $53,046. However, the cost of living is low in Lone Pine and many of the residents live simple lives.

Lone Pine is a fairly safe town though, boasting a crime rate index of 42, meaning that it’s safer than 42% of the cities in the United States.

There is a 1 in 417 chance of being a victim of a violent crime in Lone Pine and 1 in 42 chance of being a victim of a property crime. Its violent crime rate is much better than its property crime rate, which is expressed in that, in the State of California, there is a 1 in 249 chance of being a victim of a violent crime and a 1 in 38 chance of being a victim of a property crime.

  • Cannabis security plans
  • Points of Interest Security: Lone Pine and Inyo County in general relies heavily on tourism to support its economy.
